Race 1 October 30th 2007
With great weather and a sort of spooky pre-Halloween vibe, racers got to ride some of the more desolate streets in Luray. All riders were given a map with all checkpoints up front. This made for a fast race with all riders blistering the short course in under twenty minuets.
Josh Vaughn took first, even after giving the others a two minuet head start for a shoe change. Ken Koontz was a close second followed by Jordan Vaughn on a borrowed mountain bike. AOA's Gary Drum finished fourth, within three minuets of the leader.
This will be a four race series continuing on the next three consecutive Tuesdays. Each race will have new twists. Races start at Appalachian Outdoors Adventures.
Race 2 Nov.6
A cold blustery wind blew through town for race 2 as Page Valley Cycling President David Duke out distanced the rest of the field by six minutes to take the victory. Ken Koontz even though losing his checkpoint map early in the race managed to regroup and finish a strong second, taking the overall points lead. Third place was a real battle with Gary Drum edging out Jordan Vaughn. Josh Vaughn who had trouble locating a checkpoint flag was back in fifth spot, and now falls to second in the standings. Good news however, he was wearing the correct shoes. Race three is November 13 at 6:30 p.m.
Race 3 Nov. 13 Battle in the Boomfield
Disorienting streets and a mini-backyard cycle cross course were some of the challenges riders had to face for race 3. Pushing times for several riders past the one hour mark. Howard Thompson of Evergreen Outfitters was out of the gate fast, but lost time after having a headlight failure. Ken Koontz added to his lead with the victory. Appalachian's Gary Drum moved up in the standings with a second place finish. The rest of the field finished as follows: Jordan Vaughn 3rd place, Josh Vaughn and newcomer Nick(?) tied for 4th, followed by Howard Thompson. November 20th will decide the series champion.
